HAWTHORN EAST HOUSE

INTERTWINING BOLD AND STRIKING FORMS WITH A RICH PALETTE OF MATERIALS, THE RIVERBANK HOUSE DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM ITS NATURAL CONTEXT.
Situated on the doorstep of the Goulburn River, this four-bedroom home is built on the foundations of entertainment, connection and tactility. Born from collaboration between Bruce Mactier Building Designers and Ponder Studio, the result thoughtfully introduces big city living amenity in a rural context.
The Riverbank House I draws inspiration from the surrounding natural context whilst experimenting with the fluidity of movement, form and light, enhanced by tactile materials and considered details.
Composing the principal design direction for the interior was simple. The diagonal language of the gable-style roof was refined in scale and application throughout the interior, promoting sharp yet refined forms. In tandem, the natural fluidity acted as a precedent of how repeated movement and interaction would erode and sculpt the scattered, sharp, and brutalist forms within the interior. A prime example of the enmeshing of these two principles was the monolithic kitchen island bench.
Upon entry and circulation around the central courtyard, the island was carved and sculpted in response to the fluid movements out of the main hall into the entertaining spaces overlooking the river beyond. Balancing such bold and anchoring elements are subtle details, intertwined into the fabric of the building are delicate details that elevate the movement of light into the deepest recesses of each program.
